Hoosier Daddy?

The latest Economist magazine features an article about Indiana as an unlikely swing state in the upcoming election. The article is short and perhaps poorly researched (the article talks about the University of Indiana in Bloomington). The gist is that we Hoosiers are poorer, whiter and less-educated than the rest of the country and that we like to vote Republican.

The journalist interviewed a few people from Martinsville, a place where he surmised had more tattoos than people, and of course printed a quote from one resident who stated "'Men like to keep their women barefoot and pregnant here,' says Susie, a Martinsvillian who will not give her last name in case her neighbours torch her house. 'You know what’s going to hurt Obama here?', she asks. 'His colour.'”

There are some interesting comments from readers one of which called The Economist, which in my opinion is a slightly right-leaning journal, "a pinko rag".

Obama's color will hurt him in Martinsville, IMHO.

Pinko, like liberal, mans "wrong." I once had a student assure me that another prof was a "left-wing liberal." "Wait a sec - he's an active organizer for the local Republican Party, he pickets Planned Parenthood at least once a week and he owns a great many guns."

"Left-wing liberal" = I only earned a C in his class.
