NFL Draft Day

Today is the NFL Draft. The World Champion Indianapolis Colts had the last selection in the first round. It was number 32 overall.

The Colts' off season losses have been staggering. It is especially troubling that most of their losses have come on the defensive side of the ball. The defense last year was a liability and now is more depleted than before.

Do the Colts address their defense with their first pick? Oh no. They draft a slot receiver. Anthony Gonzalez out of Ohio State. You got to be kidding me. Alan Branch and Paul Posluszny were still on the board and would have been immediate help. Of course both were scooped up immediately after the Colts draft yet another offensive player.

Bill Polian may have made his first bone headed pick since taking the reigns for the Colts.

Bill Polian has always moved in mysterious ways. I don't like the first two picks, but time will tell

Actually, this was a brilliant decision, and I saw it coming.

Here's why:

When you've got the greatest offense in history, and possibly the greatest assemblage of skilled-position players ever, but your #3 WR is JOHN STANDEFORD, you take a slot WR with your first pick, period, end of story.

The fact of the matter is, the Colts are an offensive-oriented team. Given the caliber of talent there, it's unavoidable. So the idea is not so much to stop the other team from scoring points as it is to score points yourself.

On a team like the Colts, the defense's purpose isn't so much to stop the other team from scoring points as it is to get the offense back on the field. The defense plays a subordinate role--as it should when you have an offense of this caliber--and Polian acted accordingly.

The Texans first pick was excellent. I love that guy from Louisville. Maybe it will finally open some opportunity for Mario Williams to shine.
