George Will on Mitch Daniels

Tomorrow's George Will column in the Washington Post lauds Mitch Daniels. He compares him favorably to Governor Granholm of Michigan by contrasting her comments about Delphi with Daniels. Granholm criticized "Delphi's executives, Washington and globalization" while Daniels apparently contacted Delphi and asked for more Delphi operations here. Will praises Daniels' action in this age of "entrepreneurial federalism" where states compete for jobs. Does Indiana win if we attract companies like Delphi? They've already asked their employees to take a pay cut from 27 to around 10-12 dollars an hour. This is the company who proposed 90 million dollars in bonuses to its executives in the same bankruptcy proposal which would cut wages so low its workers wouldn't even be able to pay its mortgages. I do not see how Indiana wins here.

Hoosier voters were hoodwinked by Daniels' brand of populism last fall. He rolled up his sleeves, spoke plainly, slept in supporters' homes as he traveled throughout this state in his RV. He created a character who acted as if he cared about the general public. The majority of us voted for him even though he gave IPL employees Indiana's Enron. Now, he has shown he is willing to support corporate executives over Hoosier workers. This may impress George Will, but I do not know how well it fly with Indiana citizens in 2008.

Driving around in a camper and sleeping in voters homes. So that's how he did it. Being from Illinois I don't get a lot of Indiana politics, but sometimes I wish I did. I've got daughters going to college there now, so I've spent a lot of time driving through. Spent a lovely evening having dinner in downtown Indianapolis this early summer.

Well, 16 years of Democrats in the Governor's office didn't hurt either. That's quite a record to attack, but "my man mitch" really did play up the folksy charm. He's in trouble now though. There are a lot of people ready to hang him over all of the BMV office closures and the Daylight Savings Time issue.

re: those who voted for My Man Mitch, the CEO's governor - they just forgot what happened when Stephen Goldsmith tried to "privatize" Indianapolis.

Anything new sounds good when your economy is tanking and educated young workers are fleeing the state. Instead of actually looking at the root cause, blame who is in charge. That way you don't have to exert any intellectual effort or make any hard decisions, see?

Love how he now denies ever backing the "we need a $%&^%^# time zone" argument.

He's not my man. Decimating education to balance the budget does not impress me.

Indiana's Libertarian Party Chair was not too impressed with Will's characterization of Daniels as a Libertarian. His comments can be found here

Thanks to for pointing this out.

Would someone be so kind as to tell me how "Mister" Daniels, never governor to me, could do what he has done to the IPL employees and still be elected not to mention not have to go to prison? Perhaps I am being thick, but I really don't understand. Isn't this what martha and Enron was all about? I normally wouldn't say this but I simply cannot stand the man.

Mitch Daniels is a thief liar worthless bastard. He was on the board of IPL when IPL was sold to AES, We of those that work for IPL/AES at that time were blocked from selling our retirement plan stock, while Mitch and his board members sold their stock and made millions and we lost our retirement plans,Ihave nothing good to say! ...and now the 4th district has Mitch's enabler--Tod Rokita--running for BOO-yer's old seat. Why isn't anybody asking why Rokita (besides the obvious) dismissed Daniels from the Shareholder/retirees lawsuit against IPL.
