There's been the legalization of torture, warrantless wiretaps and the Military Commissions Act (MCA), which gives the president absolute power to decide who is an enemy of the US, to imprison people indefinitely without charging them with a crime, and to define what is -- and what is not -- torture and abuse.
This act represented an unprecedented attack on the basic system of habeas corpus--a fundamental Constitutional right that protects against unlawful and indefinite imprisonment.

I shit-canned my earlier comment because I hadn't had enough coffee yet, so it was a bit garbled. :)
I don't think that Sarkozy is a Thatcher or a Reagan, but I suppose that time will tell. He sounds like a blow-hard, but I don't think he's as conservative as Thatcher or Reagan, keeping in mind that "conservative" is a relative term. He certainly needs to sort out France's poor integration of its immigrants into French society, which won't be easy to do considering his shitty comments about the banlieue riots.
